Acne scars are a common aesthetic and dermatological problem that can significantly affect the appearance of the skin and self-confidence. Thanks to advances in modern dermatology, it is now possible to achieve visible improvements in skin texture and tone through an individually tailored, combined treatment approach.
Professional assessment and an individual treatment plan
Treatment of acne scars begins with a detailed dermatological examination to assess the type, depth, and extent of the scars, as well as the general condition of the skin. Based on the information obtained, a dermatovenerologist prepares a personalised treatment plan, which most often includes a combination of several modern procedures.
(In practice, I often see how much the skin can be transformed by a properly selected protocol, even when patients initially have modest expectations.)
Understanding acne scars
Scars develop as a result of inflammation caused by active acne, when the healing process may lead to raised or depressed areas of skin. Timely treatment of acne is therefore essential to prevent scars from forming!
Scars can take several forms. The most common are atrophic scars, which look like depressions in the skin due to tissue loss during healing. These include deep, narrow “ice-pick” scars; broader, sharply defined depressions known as “boxcar” scars; and wave-like skin irregularities known as “rolling” scars.
By contrast, hypertrophic scars are thickened and raised because excess collagen forms during healing.
There is also post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) – dark spots that appear after acne. Although they are not true scars, they can be aesthetically very persistent.
Combined treatments – a modern approach to skin regeneration!
Because scars differ in type, treatment must be individually tailored. Combined treatments make it possible to address both the superficial and deeper layers of the skin at the same time, stimulating renewal, collagen synthesis, and deep skin regeneration.
Chemical peel – Removes the superficial layers of the skin, evens out the complexion, and prepares the skin for other procedures.
Microneedling (SkinPen) – Fine microneedles create channels that initiate the natural healing process and collagen production, making the skin firmer and more even.
Radiofrequency microneedling (RF microneedling) – Combines mechanical stimulation with radiofrequency energy that acts deep in the dermis, promoting collagen remodelling and reducing atrophic scars with a short recovery time.
Laser treatment of acne scars – Different lasers are used to treat scars. At our polyclinic, we use Frax 1550, one of the most effective non-ablative fractional lasers. It creates a network of microscopic thermal injuries deep in the skin while leaving the surface intact. These micro-injuries stimulate the production of new collagen and the remodelling of existing collagen, resulting in a noticeable reduction in scars and improved texture.
(In my experience, improvements with the Frax 1550 laser are often most visible after only a few treatments, particularly in pronounced, deeper scars.)
PRP therapy – platelet-rich plasma – Growth factors from the patient’s own blood accelerate skin regeneration. It is often combined with laser treatment or microneedling for a synergistic effect.
Polynucleotides – Biostimulators that promote regeneration, hydration, and collagen synthesis at the cellular level. They are particularly effective when used with the Frax laser and RF microneedling.
Subcision or hyaluronic acid fillers – For depressed scars, subcision releases adhesions beneath the skin, and a hyaluronic acid filler may be added as needed to smooth uneven areas.
Professional supervision and monitoring of results
Throughout the treatment, a dermatovenerologist carefully monitors the skin’s response and adjusts the procedures as needed. Professional supervision is essential for maximum effectiveness, safety, and optimal aesthetic results.
Post-treatment skin care and expected results
Skin renewal is a process that takes time. With proper care, recommended dermocosmetic products, and adequate intervals between treatments, the results are gradual but long-lasting: the skin becomes smoother, firmer, and healthier-looking, while the scars gradually become less visible!
Our mission – healthy and beautiful skin!
At our practice, every patient receives an individual approach, and all procedures are performed by an expert team of dermatovenerologists using modern, safe, and medically proven technologies.
Our goal is to restore the health and beauty of the skin – with complete control, safety, and trust!
